Located off Junction 2 of the M40, the motorway service area at Beaconsfield sought to bring the MSA Extra brand to the forefront of contemporary, sustainable design.

The facility provides 3000 sqm of amenity/retail facilities, an 85 bed hotel, supporting petrol filling station and 750 car parking spaces set within ancient woodland. The amenity building houses ten retail units such as M&S, McDonalds, Starbucks and WHSmiths surrounding an atrium dining space.

The detailed design for the buildings was developed by the team at Architecture519 to achieve detailed planning approval from the LPA. Carillion Construction was appointed as main contractor for the project and they retained Architecture519 to deliver the construction information. The striking free form curved roof offers visitors their first glimpse of the contemporary design, which is influenced by airport architecture. A business centre links this to the adjacent Etap Hotel and both facilities overlook a landscaped picnic area and courtyard.

The design created a highly sustainable facility for ‘MSA Extra’ with grey water recycling, reed beds and a solar wall to harness energy.
